Low carbon home officially opened in Lincolnshire — May 27, 2009

A home specially constructed using sustainable building techniques is to be officially opened near Peterborough. The three bedroom home was built using a timber frame design and will remain only partly built to show the ‘nuts and bolts’ involved in creating a timber frame that meets the Level 3 and 4 requirements of the government’s Code for Sustainable Homes.

Key parts of the timber frame structure have been purposely left unfinished to demonstrate how it is easily possible to combine different building technologies and techniques and meet the high and demanding environmental standards without spending huge amounts of money.

Some of the floors, parts of the internal walls and ceilings and other building parts have been not built to enable visitors to see how a timber frame home is built and the manner in which the insulation is installed. The timber frame home is also fitted with energy-saving and water-saving technologies such as an air source heat pump, rain water harvesting, and solar panels.

The regulations set by the government mean that most new homes built for housing associations and local councils should adhere to at least the Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, a quality standard that make the homes cost-effective and cheaper to run and reduce the harmful effects on the environment.

Nuns move to new environmental friendly convent — May 26, 2009

An environmental friendly convent has become the new home for 25 Benedictine nuns, who sold their old convent in Worcestershire and moved into the new accommodation at Wass, near Helmsley, North Yorks.

The Benedictine nuns had applied for planning permission for the monastery in 2004, and the planning and design took place throughout 2005 and 2006 and the building process started in 2007.

The building site for the monastery is near the ruins of Byland Abbey, once one of northern England’s biggest abbeys, and was chosen primarily because of its peace, beauty and location.

The new green convent is made from responsibly sourced timber frame and recycled materials and has a reedbed sewage system, rainwater harvesting, woodchip boiler and sedum roof.

In the brief to the architects, the nuns wanted to be sensitive to the environmental and have a solution that allowed them to live simply. Other features in the environmental friendly monastery include composting toilets and solar panels.

Buildings built using timber frames and other environmental friendly resources are the ideal homes to live in. Timber frame homes do not have any harmful impact on the environment and help in reducing the energy used and thus the heating bills. Because of the many benefits offered by timber frame homes and other homes built using sustainable building techniques, such homes are becoming more popular day by day.

In the United Kingdom, many studies and reports have showed that reverting to traditional methods for construction will help in reaping greater and more sustainable rewards.

Government bodies are investing millions of pounds into projects that are developed using sustainable construction methods. The new building techniques are then showcased to an international audience, thereby providing many opportunities for local painters, craftsmen and plumbers to learn and master new skills. However, according to experts, the biggest benefit of sustainable development will be seen from timber-frame buildings.

Experts suggest that a shift to timber frame homes could be the norm in the UK in the next 10 years, as it not only offers many environmental benefits but also has many economic benefits. Timber frame houses and insulation always go hand in hand. The best aspect of a timber frame home is that it has better potential for adding extra insulation. Many builders have now started constructing homes that are made from timber frames. These homes make an ideal choice rather than constructing homes that are made from conventional blocks and bricks.

Timber frame houses are quite popular due to their sturdiness and the insulation factor. The type of insulation you choose for your home purely depends on the place where you choose to have it and also upon your budget. When it comes to insulation, fibreglass can be considered the most affordable type of insulator.

Fibreglass is usually used as loft insulation as it can be easily placed flat between the ceiling joints. Furthermore, fibreglass batts can also be used to fill vertical space between studs. You can also find other types of insulators including mineral wool.

Mineral wool makes an ideal type of insulator for your timber frame home. However, these types of insulators are a little more expensive than fibreglass. Depending upon the type and level of insulation you need for your home, you can opt for the right insulation.
