Category: Information — Author: Ken

A timber frame home can last for centuries. Nowadays, you can build timber frame homes that are more durable and attractive than conventional homes. There is a big difference between timber frame homes that were built 30 years ago and today’s timber frame homes. There are many tools available today to build a timber frame home, like computer numerical control (CNC) and computer aided design (CAD). These tools allow builders to create beautiful designs and also allow homeowners to custom design their timber frame home.

Douglas fir is perhaps the most popular wood used to construct a timber frame home. Timber frame homes are well insulated and very accurate in their construction. Timber frame homes are generally designed for open floor plans. Timber frame homes have a modern appeal now and provide comfort, security and pleasure.

Before building a timber frame home you should refer to magazines and books as they provide pictures of timber frame interiors and sample floor plans. Choose the one that appeals to you and best suits your needs. Make sure that you have organised the structure well and thought about how much living space you will need. You should also consider the best location for your room if you want the sun to brighten up your rooms.

Features of a timber frame home — October 30, 2008

There is something quaint about a timber frame house, which conveys a very warm and rustic feel, drawing a prospective homeowner’s attention. Even your modern, large home can well have that log cabin aura to it.

A true conventional timber frame home usually has huge exposed beams with nice handcrafted interlocking joints that are devoid of any nails. Such a building technique is quite reliable and is backed up by solid technology and building techniques.

The frame is assembled by using beams of a hearty wood such as white pine or douglas fir that are joined together with a ‘mortise’ (the hole) and ‘tenon’ (the tongue). They are usually held together with wooden oak pegs, after which the frame is enclosed with the help of insulation panels and studded interior walls.

Timber frame homes are ideal for open concept designs because the exterior frame provides all the necessary support – there are no load-bearing interior walls. To make the best of the true benefits of using timber frames, approach a service provider that will provide high quality design followed by a meticulous manufacturing process backed by the proper construction of all timber frame components.

What is happening in the UK mortgage industry? — October 28, 2008

Category: Mortgages — Author: Brad

In recent times there has been a lot of competition between banks and other financial institutions along with building societies. And this is not the friendly kind of competition, but something that has led to a far more serious problem. That problem is financial deregulation. The only industry that is benefiting from this is the mortgage industry. But now, this problem is hitting them back straight in their faces, as the house prices in the UK are falling.

Current account mortgages have become popular as they allow low interest payments. They allow for borrowers to combine their current account with their mortgage, and the savings in the current accounts are used to reduce the mortgage capital. Another popular scheme is the self-certification process which allows borrowers to obtain loans without giving any proof of income. This is good for the self-employed or people with variable income. Interest only mortgages are another popular product, as it is a more affordable alternative, but offers only a short-term benefit.

Mortgages have also been affected by the housing prices in the UK. Although getting a loan is easier now that financial institutions have relaxed the rules a bit. But this does not mean that the fall in housing prices is not hitting people. Every type of construction is seeing problems. In fact a lot of people have been turning to a viable option, which is building their own houses from materials such as timber frames. This provides a less expensive, yet sturdy option.

Is the UK entering a recession? — October 27, 2008

Category: Housing Market — Author: Ken

The UK housing industry is in a slump, as housing prices fall. This has, in turn led to a steady decline in the sale of property all over the country. The struggle against the rising mortgage rates is not really helping the situation either. All this is enough evidence that the country has entered a recession.

Statistics show that just 61,000 properties that were worth £40,000 were sold in September, which is less than half the amount that changed hands exactly a year before. Housing prices are falling by more than 10 percent each year. Which is adversely affecting both the seller and the buyer. No matter what the construction, from steel to timber frame, everyone is getting a bad deal.

Not only is the housing market being destroyed, but even other goods manufactured in the country have seen a sharp decline. In fact, some say that it is the worst they have seen in a decade. Apparently, 46% of manufacturing companies in the country have seen a decrease in orders since July. Ernst & Young has also stated that the country has been in recession since July and that the economy will not see any growth till 2010.

The reality of the housing industry — October 26, 2008

The housing industry, as everyone can tell, is a big mess. People have borrowed far too much money and now do not have the means to pay it back. And the housing prices are not exactly doing anything to help.

Anyone thinking of buying a house in the near future, especially with a mortgage, is bound to suffer a loss not only today, but also for the next few years, as the monthly payment to salary ratio is currently unbalanced. New families, especially those with children, suffer a lot because of this. It is impossible to buy a house at the current rates, as it is simply unaffordable. Even retired people are having problems, as many of them do not have any savings. Everyone has been affected by this problem.

Every kind of construction from modern to timber frame is suffering from this predicament, as the number of new home buyers is reducing day by day. Banks have no problem in giving loans, but with fluctuating interest rates and hidden clauses in the fine print, they have made everyone a little wary of the situation.

UK government to bail out new homes market — October 25, 2008

The new homes market is suffering, and in order to ease this suffering, Britain’s social housing industry is trying to get hold of £1 billion of the tax payers’ money to get rid of this deficit. They are currently holding meetings with the government in order to do this.

The money obtained will be used to free besieged builders from thousands of new homes at prices that are heavily subsidised. Most of these constructions are family homes and inner city apartments, which were supposed to be bought by private builders. But due to the decline in sales, many of them lie vacant or just partly finished.

If the proposal is agreed upon, the big house builders will be helped the most, as their share prices have fallen drastically. The proposal will also be beneficial to the government, as their plan to build three million homes by 2020 has long since been torn to shreds. The package will also allow those people to sell their homes, whose houses are to be repossessed.

This catastrophe has befallen everyone from home owners to builders. Every kind of construction from corporate to timber frame has been affected by this mighty fall. Maybe this is the answer to everyone’s problems. For now, everyone will just have to wait and see.

Choosing between steel or timber frames — October 24, 2008

There are many considerations to keep in mind when making a choice between steel and timber frames for your home. Both of them have their own unique advantages, but you have to think about a few things such as the location and surroundings and last but not least, the budget.

The framing for both these materials is very similar. There are a few differences though and wood does seem to have a few advantages over steel. For one, wood does cost a lot less than steel. It is also an extremely versatile material when it comes to the actual construction of the house. Wood can definitely adapt to just about any kind of home style or floor plan.

Wood also has been a tried and tested means of construction and has been used for hundreds of years. A steel frame home will never give off that old world nostalgic feel like a timber frame home does. One more advantage of having a timber frame home is that it also provides a great deal of insulation.

All in all, timber frame homes can give you complete value for money and will last a really long time.
